You can grow Calendula as known as Pot Marigold seeds indoors in a seed starter mix about 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Or, you can sow them directly into the garden just before the last spring frost date. Use any well-draining, organic potting soil, or you can make a mixture with a blend of half garden soil and half compost. Make sure the pot has plenty of drainage holes since this plant does not like to be soggy. Potted specimens will need regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer. Sow directly in March to April or August to September

Calendula plants don't like soggy soil so keep the soil moderately moist. It is best to apply deep drenches and let the container dry out before watering anew. When you use compost as part of the soil mixture, the plants do not need fertilizing, but a high phosphorus formula can encourage more blooms. Don't keep in full sun, try to keep in part shade. Calendula will not do well in the hot summer heat and prefers the cooler temperatures of spring and early fall. calendula does not need any extra fertilizing or feeding. Calendula grows nicely in the vegetable garden.

There are a lot of health benefits in Pot Marigold. Although the 'pot' in the common name "pot marigold" refers to this plant's traditional use in cooking, calendula is also commonly planted in pots, where it thrives. The herb's antifungal and antimicrobial properties help prevent infection and heal injuries to body tissues. Calendula is also known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components, which might help to fight cancer, protect against heart disease, and ease muscle fatigue.
