HOW TO GROW NEW ZEALAND SPINACH FROM SEEDS

A warm-weather annual New Zealand spinach grows best between 16 and 24° C. Sow New Zealand spinach 12mm deep and 5-10cm apart. In spring, sow seeds in the garden about the time of the average last frost. For transplanting later in the spring, start New Zealand spinach indoors two to three weeks before the last frost date. New Zealand spinach is not frost-hardy like true spinach. Plant in the warm part of the year when regular spinach will not grow. The plant will tolerate drought, but the leaves will not be as tender.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF NEW ZEALAND SPINACH

It is essential to plant New Zealand spinach in full sun because it prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. New Zealand spinach is weak-stemmed and looks like it trails across the garden. Set plants in hills similar to squash. Add well-aged compost to planting beds before planting. In places where the summer heat is intense, plant the spinach to get partial shade in the afternoon.

NEW ZEALAND SPINACH USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS

As with common spinach, New Zealand spinach can be used raw, sautéed, steamed, or braised. Foraged locally, this leafy vegetable thrives. Make salads or use them as a bed for meats and fish. Sauté and combine with cheeses and herbs to stuff chicken or pork. Calcium absorption in the body is greatly enhanced by spinach from New Zealand, which balances calcium to phosphorus levels. New Zealand spinach is low in protein, carbohydrates, and calories, making it a healthy addition to your diet.
