Arugula does best in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, but it can grow in many conditions. It prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH between six and seven. If you want the best results, place the plants in full sun for at least six hours every day. Arugula will also grow in partial shade. As pests and diseases may persist in areas where arugula has recently been planted, it is best to avoid planting it there. Approximately an inch apart, plant 1 cm deep in rows ten inches apart. Alternatively, mix arugula seeds with other salad greens or broadcast arugula seeds alone. Arugula seeds will germinate in soil temperatures as low as 4°C.
CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF ROCKET ARUGULA
Make sure the soil is evenly moist in warm weather to prevent bolting. As your plants grow, thin them out to avoid overcrowding and disease. Leaves should be picked in the evening to not wilt in the hot sun. Arugula is a great companion plant! It is accessible to seed around many slower-growing crops because it has shallow roots and doesn't take much space. You may also want to find strains that are heat-resistant if you're growing in summer. Wild arugula is more heat tolerant. It matures a bit slower, taking about five weeks to grow, so remember that if you're planting for a continual harvest.
ROCKET ARUGULA USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS
Raw arugula is often served in salads. Pepper pairs nicely with other strong flavors, such as salty cheeses, citrus, and more. It's also used to top cooked pizzas or whirled into pesto. As a mild side dish or addition to soups, pasta, and other dishes, the greens can also be sautéed. One cup of arugula a day will provide your body with 100 percent of the vitamin K it needs. Arugula contains eight times more calcium than iceberg lettuce. There is evidence that it contains indole-3-carbinol and isothiocyanates, which suppress inflammation in the body.
