Mandrake Seeds | Mandragora officinarum
KNOW ABOUT MANDRAKE
The Mandrake - Mandragora officinarum, which blooms from the rosette of leaves in spring, is one of the notorious witch's herbs and a main component of the 'flight ointments'. Also native to us, but rarely and perhaps only to be found by true herbalists. The mandrake grows mainly on stony slopes in the eastern Mediterranean area. But it can also be found in North Africa, the Middle East, and as far as the Himalayas. Because of their appearance and the human-like shape of the root, all sorts of legends have grown up around them.
INSTRUCTION FOR DIRECT SOWING
Mandrake needs very light and permeable soil with a high proportion of sand or gravel. Bringing mandrake seeds to life is not easy and takes patience. In order to germinate the mandrake seeds, a winter period must be simulated. it is best to place the seeds in a slightly sterile substrate that can be sand or sterile cactus substrate, in the refrigerator about 5 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks. It can then be sown directly in autumn.
ALTERNATIVE SOWING AND CARE
As an alternative to direct sowing, the seeds can also be sown in sowing pots in October. They should spend the winter in a protected area outdoors. In this case, it is very important that the substrate does not dry out. The germination can take up to 12 months. As soon as the seeds germinate, place the containers under a couple of fluorescent bulbs or grow lights. Don't depend on direct sunlight from a window, which may be too cool at night and too hot during the day. Plant mandrake outdoors when the roots are large enough to survive on their own.
