Artichoke Seeds – Romanesco
HOW TO SOW PURPLE GLOBE
There are not so many differences in growing green globe Artichoke and purple globe Artichoke. As we described in our green globe you can use the same method. But in some cases let us describe a little thing. Sow seeds in March and April 13mm deep in a seedbed, Plant two or three seeds in each 3 to 4-inch pot. Fill the pot two-thirds full of good quality, compost-rich soil-based medium. sowing two or three seeds per station, with 25-30cm in and between the rows. Thin to leave the strongest seedling.
CARE AFTER GERMINATION
Be patient while growing Artichoke. Artichokes take at least 110-150 days to reach maturity if planting from seed and 100 days from divisions. Most do not flower until the second year of growth. Once the harvest is over, cut the plants back to 1-2 inches off the ground to try for a second harvest. New sprouts will form at the base of the plant. Artichoke plants require full sun, so if you plant them too closely together, the large plants can shade smaller ones.
KNOW ABOUT THIS FRUIT
When eaten raw, artichokes retain a much firmer texture and a bitter taste. Cooking both softens the texture and produces a blender flavor making it similar to boiled potatoes. The globe artichoke, also known by the names French artichoke and green artichoke in the U.S., is a variety of a species of thistle cultivated as a food. The edible portion of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom.
