Luffa Gourd seeds should be soaked for 24 hours before planting. In spring, sow the seeds 8 to 12 inches apart along a fence as soon as the ground is warm enough to work and all danger of frost has passed. Most gardeners in northern parts of the nation start seeds in pots indoors a few weeks before planting, then transplant them outdoors once the weather is warm and settled.

Usually, Luffa vines grow to around 30 feet long and need a strong trellis. Therefore, if you plan to plant them, be prepared to give them sturdy support such as a fence or trellis. Every 4 to 6 weeks, feed your luffa plants with a diluted liquid fertilizer or compost tea.
