HOW TO GROW YELLOW ZINNIA FROM SEEDS

After the last frost, sow zinnia seeds directly in the garden in a well-drained soil amended with compost. It is best to plant seeds one centimeter deep in rows or clumps a few inches apart. Keep moist until germination, which usually takes a week. Seedlings should be thinned between six to eighteen inches apart when they are about three inches tall with a few true leaves. The recommended spacing and mature spread vary according to the cultivar. The roots of this annual are delicate and don't like to be disturbed, so if you live somewhere with a long growing season, you should start it outdoors.

CARE FOR YELLOW ZINNIA AFTER GERMINATION

Plants should be watered at their base to maintain their health. Soaker hoses are ideal for keeping foliage and petals dry and necessary irrigation. The best time to water zinnias is in the early morning, which allows the flowers and foliage to dry off before nightfall. For young plants, moisten the soil without letting it get too wet. Since grown zinnias are somewhat drought-tolerant, they require less watering as they grow. Zinnia plants provide long-term color and beauty in the summer flower bed with proper placement and watering.

USES AND BENEFITS OF YELLOW ZINNIA

Many tribes in the Southwest use Zinnia flowers and leaves as medicinal and ritual spices. The yellow zinnia is considered one of the sacred Life Medicines of the Navajo people. Aside from making dyes and paints with bright colors, zinnias were also used to make dyes and paints. Nectar-rich zinnias attract bees and are excellent pollinators during their growing season, from May to October. They are also attracted to hummingbirds, Japanese beetles, ladybugs, and wasps. Zinnias are an excellent choice among gardeners seeking easy-to-maintain flowers.
