HOW TO GROW FROM SEEDS

Aubergine which is known as Eggplant can be grown very easily from seeds. Sow early October to November, or Mid-November to December, or late January to February. Germinates at 20°C. Sow the seeds in cell packs or small pots, 1/4 inch deep. Water them well, cover loosely with a plastic bag or a plastic seedling flat cover to retain moisture, and place them in a warm spot on top of the refrigerator or on seedling heat mats would be perfect. Make sure that the soil is moist. You should see condensation on the inside of your plastic bag or dome. If you don't, then it's time to water with a gentle mist to avoid dislodging the seeds. The seeds will germinate without additional heat, but it will take longer. So if you want to germinate faster give them additional heat.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION

Generally, the Aubergine seeds germinate in 7 to 14 days. Once they've germinated, remove the plastic cover and place your pot or flat under lights or in a bright window. Continue to keep your eggplant seedlings moist as they grow for the next eight to ten weeks. When plants are 3-4 inches high plant into 9 in pots or 3 plants per grow bag and placed under glass. Outdoors plants may be transplanted to a sunny sheltered spot. Nutritional levels should be pH 6 - 6.5 with N, P, K, Mg indices around 3. It will harvest in the next 80 Days. Just do a little labor and you will have some awesome-looking Aubergine.

SOME TIPS AND TRICKS

To ensure the plants' security they should be supported with vertical strings or canes, and also with horizontal ties or loops around the plants to keep them from sprawling. Pruning - While 2 or 3 stems can be taken, plants can be maintained on one stem with side shoots reduced beyond the flowers which form. The basic object is to aim for 6 - 9 fruits per plant, though this can be exceeded in longer-term culture.
