Seeds for Mint should be started indoors in late spring, using a compacted soilless mix and drainage holes in seed trays or small pots. You should not use a potting mix that contains fertilizer, because the fertilizer's chemicals will burn the plants and their roots. Seed starting mixes can be purchased from professional growers or can be made at home by combining ingredients like peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Make sure the excess water runs out of the drainage holes by thoroughly watering the medium. Mix peppermint seeds lightly into the mix and scatter them on the surface. It's best not to cover seedlings with the mix as they germinate best when exposed to light. Mist the growing medium every day to keep it moist. Typically, seedlings germinate in 10 to 16 days.

Make sure to thin and transplant when the seedlings are 2 inches high. Start seeds indoors before the last frost, and plant outdoors only afterward. Aim for a distance of 12 to 20 inches between plants. Remove all weeds and loosen the soil by placing it in a location that receives some shade in the afternoon. Containers on decks and patios look great with peppermint. You should use a large container to give the plant room to spread. Cut any trailing stems that touch the ground below the pot to prevent it from growing roots where it touches the ground.
