HOW TO GROW GREEN ROMAINE LETTUCE FROM SEEDS
Get an early start by working in compost or manure in the previous fall and raking it smooth to leave a fine seedbed. To germinate, seeds need light. Plant the seeds less than a centimeter deep, one inch apart in rows and twelve to eighteen inches apart. For crisphead varieties, you can thin after they have two or three true leaves, and for other types, you can thin when they have six to ten leaves. Additionally, you can lightly broadcast seed (particularly loose-leaf varieties) in a patch rather than in a row. For three days before transplanting, reduce the water and temperature for the seedlings.
CARE FOR GREEN ROMAINE LETTUCE AFTER GERMINATION
When the weather is warm, row covers can be used to protect plants, protect young plants from insects, and (supported by hoops) shade crops. Plants should be positioned partially shaded by taller nearby plants, latticework, or other screens. Salad lettuce has a shallow root system. Make sure the soil is moist to ensure plants grow continuously. Maintain moisture and suppress weeds with mulch (unless slugs are a problem). Fertilize to encourage faster growth. Keep the soil moist but not saturated. Seedlings are not as tolerant of freezing as mature plants.
USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF GREEN ROMAINE LETTUCE
It is mild in taste and crisp in texture, and it has sturdy leaves that make it better heat tolerant than other lettuce varieties. Salad greens are most commonly prepared, though they can also be grilled and sautéed. Along with other vegetables, romaine has become a grilling staple in recent years. In addition to being a healthy part of a balanced diet, Romaine lettuce can provide even more health benefits if eaten regularly. Leafy greens are lower in calories and high in nutritional value, making them an excellent and healthy addition to any diet.
