One of the best things you can do for your kitchen is to grow your own chilies at home, in your own garden. You see, planting and growing chilies at home aren't that hard. It doesn't require any expert gardening skills, plus it doesn't ask for any professional equipment either.

Simply said, you can grow your chilies at home even if you're a novice gardener who doesn't have any special equipment at hand.

There are more than a few reasons why you must get started with this journey. First, having your own set of chilies is undoubtedly a plus for foodies who also love to cook at home. Second, with their colorful appearances, chilies boost your garden's beauty by a ton.

If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to take you through this colorful venture, sit tight and read this post till the end. We have covered everything you need to know about this subject.

Let's dive in.

First things first — what do you need to get started?

Not much. As said earlier, growing chilies doesn't require any specific equipment.

Here are the few things you need to get started.

  1. Chili seeds
  2. High-fertility soil
  3. Paper towels
  4. Planters (if you plan to not plant in the ground)

Where to get your chili seeds?

To make your chili planting journey a success, you need to get your chili seeds from a trusted supplier. Plus, the supplier must also have seeds for various kinds of chilies. You aren't planning to plant a single type of chilies, are you?

Steps to plant chili seeds

Here are the steps you must follow to plant your chili seeds.

Get the seeds ready for plantation.

The first step is to prepare the pepper seeds for the plantation.

To do that:

  1. Take your paper towel and spread it wide on the ground.
  2. Place all the seeds on it, then spray some water on them.
  3. Please fold the paper towel and put it aside.

Keep the paper towel like that for like a week. Make sure to spray water on it every day, so it stays damp. Please don't put it in an arid environment, a bit of warmth and humidity is required for the seeds to get ready.

Plant the seeds

Next, you're going to plant the seeds in the soil.

If you're using planters, fill them with fertilized soil and plant the seeds in it. If you're planting on the ground, spread them on the soil and sprinkle some fertilized soil on the top.

Water the seeds

Just like every other plant, chili plants need water to grow — but not a lot.

Some people mistake putting in too much water to their chili seeds — but that's not the way to go. Instead, please give them a little bit of water that doesn't make the seeds submerged. To put it simply for you, give them as much water as you would try in a few hours.

That's because chili seeds prefer a dry-wet-dry-wet cycle, it makes them grow faster and better!

Growing in

After around a week of planting the seeds, you will see two tiny leaves coming out of the soil. You don't need to do anything special to take care of those, just keep watering them as you usually do.

30-45 days after the plantation, you will see tiny blossoms coming out of the plants. They will stay on for around a week, then fall off.

After a few days, you must see a small chili taking the place of the fallen flower.

Pluck them away

When the baby chili grows to around 5cm in length, you're free to pluck it. However, different kinds of chilies should be plucked after different periods.

But in most cases, your gut feeling will tell you whether chili is ready to be plucked.

If you want your chilies to get spicier and fuller in flavor, let it on for a few more days. Don't pluck them until they turn red if you want your regular green chilies to grow hotter. The longer they stay on, the hotter they get!

Suit yourself and pluck them away when you feel like it.

Some instructions to keep in mind

Here are a few things that you must keep in mind while you're growing chilies.

  1. Only choose your seeds from a trusted supplier that doesn't compromise on quality.
  2. Pick a supplier that has multiple seed types so that you can add a bit of variety to your chili garden.
  3. While you keep your seeds in a damp paper towel, ensure you're not exposing them to direct sunlight.
  4. But when you're on to the next step, i.e., planting, do it in a location with direct sunlight. Chili plants love the heat.
  5. Make sure to water your chili plants regularly, but don't overdo it. Otherwise, the plants may drown.
  6. Let the chilies stay on the plant for longer if you want them to become spicier and hotter.
